We present Benzalkonium Chloride, which is a kind of cationic surfactant generally utilized as a disinfectant and preservative in an extensive range of products like wound disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and eye drops. It works by interfering the cell membranes of microorganisms, leading to their death. It is considered effective against a number of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. But, it may cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, and contribute to the growth of antibiotic resistance. Uses of Benzalkonium Chloride should be carefully controlled and monitored, particularly in healthcare facilities where its overuse may lead to the exposure of resistant strains of microorganisms.
